- Goaltending -

Okay, so in a dialogue with David Staples (Cult of Hockey) and Antony Ta (Strange Deadfellows) regarding Roloson's goaltending and his inconsistency.

Here's a look at some goaltending stats. When I'm looking at the win/loss streaks - those aren't team wins/losses - those are the goalies stats - meaning how many streaks of 3 or more games they had when starting.

Also, since I'm going back a few years, I'm not looking solely at 3+ game losing streaks - I'm looking at 3+ game non-win streaks and non-loss streaks - this is to include ties. So, essentially what I'm doing is seeing how many times a goalie went on a winless, or lossless streak of 3 or more starts.

The number in brackets after the number of streaks represents the longest streak without a loss, or the longest streak without a win - for example, 8 starts without a loss, or 8 games without a win.

TOTALS
Name - Games Started - Wins/losses/ties - Lossless Streaks (3 games or more)/Winless streaks - GS/Lossless Streaks/ GS/Winless Streaks
Roloson........284 GS.............115-150-26..................13/28.............21.8/10.1.......-11.7
Luongo.........429 GS.............189-212-25...................27/41.............15.9/10.5........-5.4
Salo...............179GS.............77-76-25.......................15/11...............11.9/16.3.......+4.4
Garon...........140 GS.............73-69...........................10/10..............14.0/14.0......0
Kiprusoff......242 GS............132-108........................15/13..............16.1/18.6.......+2.5
Budaj............98 GS................53-45........................8/6.................12.3/16.3.......+4
Backstrom..109 GS...............67-40.........................11/4................9.9/27.3........+17.4

For the second last column here, you would ideally want a low first number, and a high second number. That would mean that a goalie has MORE 3 or more game LOSSLESS streaks than they do WINLESS streaks. The last number there is simply the +/- for the goalies Lossless/Winless ratio. This number is meant to show consistency - to an extent. A high number means this goalie is capable of winning 3 or more games in a row, but does not lose 3 or more games very often. One note on this - Luongo's numbers since the lockout are considerably better than before. After the lockout he has a +2.6 rating.

What I was hoping this would show (and it clearly does) is that Roli goes on far more "losing" streaks than he does "winning" streaks. Just consider the fact that since the lockout Roli has only had 2 winning streaks of 3 games or more. At the same time he has had 16 streaks where he's lost 3 or more games - and this is all in 151 starts.

On the other hand Garon has 10 winning streaks and 10 losing streaks since the lockout in only 140 starts. So, Garon has had more winning streaks and fewer losing streaks, in fewer starts than Roli since the lockout. To me that shows a level of consistency for Garon that Roli simply cannot match.

NAME.................WIN%...............Streak +/-
Roloson...............40.5%..................-11.7
Luongo................44.1%...................-5.4
Salo......................43.0%..................+4.4
Garon..................52.1%....................0
Kiprusoff.............54.5%...................+2.5
Budaj...................54.0%...................+4
Backstrom..........61.5%..................+17.4

Again, since the lockout, Luongo has a winning percent of 53.6%, and a +/- of +2.6

- Post game stuff -

Hey all. So as mentioned before, I was at the game last night with Antony from Strange Deadfellows. We met David Staples from Cult of Hockey at the game as well last night.

I will have a statistical post game synopsis later today. I left my USB key at work, so I didn't have access to my files, but I should have it up sometime this afternoon - after lunch.

Also, for those have problems with the blog, let me know how it's looking. Is the text too small? Is it squished? What browser are you using, and if you know your monitor resolution, let me know that as well.

- Game # 18 - Post-Game Info - vs. Detroit Red Wings - Monday November 17, 2008 -

Feel free to rate how you feel the Oil did tonight!
I will have combined stats for tonight and tomorrow's game up tomorrow evening after the game.

David Staples of the Cult Of Hockey asked if could rate the game tonight, so here are my rankings:

Gagner - (6) The only thing keeping Gagner from receive a 5 was that he had 3 shots on net, and was 50% in the faceoff dot, with 8 wins. For the most part, I didn't notice him at all.

Hemsky - (5) Could really take a page out of Datsyuk and Zetterburg's books - they're so useful and dangerous in all situations, and never quit. 1 shot, 3 giveaways. That's why he gets a 5. Not too much keeping him from 4 tonight.

Moreau - (5) Bad call on the penalty in the first - I didn't think it was a penalty. Had a nice hit in Lilja. No shots on net. Looked flatfooted for most of the night.

Horcoff - (5) Still looks a step behind. Cement hands on the 5-on-3 PP. However, he did do well on the PK. 5 shots directed on net, 1 hit, 2 giveaways.

Cogliano - (7) - Good speed on the 2-on-1's - would have liked to see some finish though. I thought he was the best Oiler tonight that wasn't named Roloson or Souray. He's lucky he didn't get a 6 with a 20% in the faceoff dot. However, he did have his legs, and I thought showed a lot of hustle.

Nilsson - (6) Showed some good hustle, had a few decent chances, but couldn't finish. 3 shots on net, but I'm still not sold. There were a few bad decisions with the puck, luckily none of them ended up in the net. Wasn't the worst Oiler tonight, but could have played better.

Pisani - (6) Had 2 hits, and 1 shot on net in limited action. Not a second liner game, but a Pisani game. He's on the 2nd line, but isn't a 2nd line player - which is in no way his fault. Hopefully he's not too badly hurt, although it looked pretty bad.

Cole - (4) - Was given 2 hits on the stat sheet, but I didn't notice him at all. He's getting a 4 because he had over 4 minutes on the PP, and did absolutely nothing. Horcoff played roughly the same game but got a 5 because he at least contributed on the PK.

Reddox (6) - Piss and vinegar indeed. Looked like he was flying early on. Didn't notice him too much in the later half of hte game, but had 3 hits, and did a good job on the PK.

Stortini - (4) - Lost the fight. Didn't do too much else.

Brodziak - (5) Looked flat footed on the second Wings goal. 29% in the faceoff dot, zero hits a game after being benched for not being physical enough.

Pouliot - (5) HIT THE NET!! Three missed shots, 1 shot that was blocked, no hits, no shots on net, 1 blocked shot. Nothing much else. Had a bit of energy, but I still don't know what he's doing on the team. What is his role?

Souray - (7) Bad penalty on Holmstrom, but a great job on the 2nd PP to keep the puck in and get shots on net. Can't blame him on his second penalty. Directed 10 shots on net - second only to Hossa who had 12. Played solid all night long. Along with Cogs, the best Oiler out there.

Visnovsky - (5) Really bad pass early in the first, and never really got any better. 1 shot, 1 hit, 1 blocked shot. The Wings directed 67 shots on net. He's got to do a better job than that. Didn't do much tonight.

Staios - (5) You could have told me he wasn't playing tonight, and I would have believed you. He had one decent pinch, blocked 2 shots, but didn't do much else.

Strudwick - (6) - Solid on the PK all night, directed 3 shots on net, blocked another 3. I'm (__) <--- this close to giving him a 7, simply based on the subpar play of everyone else. It's not like some of the guys played terrible, but they all played kinda crappy. Grebeshkov - (6) A few good passes, but well below his regular standard of play. I normally have him at a steady 7 most nights, but did not look good on the Franzen goal. Was also on the ice on the first PP goal against.

Gilbert - (6) - Nice play on the PK 5-3. Nice job knocking the net off the posts and not getting called for it on the PK. Him and Grebby did not look good on the Franzen goal, but overall I didn't think he played too poorly. I think a 5.5 might be better for both him and Grebby, but I'll round up.

Roloson - (7) I only got two looks at the second goal, and I don't really know what to think about it. On the first goal, I don't think he had much chance. Roli looked like he was playing with a lot of confidence, and I thought he had really good rebound control. Can't blame him at all when the Wings directed 67 shots to the net. 37 saves deserves a 7.

- Game # 17 - Post-Game Info - vs. Colorado Avalanche - Saturday November 15, 2008 -

Hey all. So, I was at the game tonight with my girlfriend and her father - her mom was supposed to come, but couldn't make it out. I won't be doing a post game tonight, but will hopefully get it done tomorrow after the parents leave.

I did want to let everyone know that if you were watching the game tonight, I personally started the Lets Go Oilers chant 3 times. It was all me! Once was at about the 14 minute markish of the first period - the last Lets Go Oilers of the first. The second one was at the 11:30ish mark of the second, and I got another one going in the third. It was awesome.

As for the game - I still hate Pouliot, and I'm still not a fan of Nilsson, but I do recognize he had a good game.
I still think something's wrong with Horcoff's shoulder - and this has nothing to do with the empty net miss. There's something missing in his game.

Anyways, I thought it was a pretty good game overall, but I really want to hear/see what people thought of those two final penalties. I thought the first one was deserved, but I have no idea what happened on Pisani's penalty.

Was it as bad as I thought it was? Did the ref royally screw up? I thought the officiating was pretty poor...
